Campo de Fiori means "Field of Flowers" is one of Rome's most colorful and vibrant squares. The square began in the Middle Ages as an actual meadow and has grown to be a busy market site and meeting place for locals. By day, it is a colorful and fun open-air market with stalls selling fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs, spices, and specialty goods giving a nice little slice of local Roman life. By night, it is a social place with cafes, trattorias, and juice places around the square. In the square is a brooding and statuesque memorial to philosopher Giordano Bruno which memorializes his execution at the hands of the catholic church in 1600, a reminder of the layered history of the square.
